Grade 2. lesson 11 Grouping Notes

Grouping Notes in New Time Signature

Grouping notes of small values was covered in lesson 9 of grade one. Where the grouping was made with notes of less values than a 1 beat note.
Grouping notes for grade two is little difference, you will be working with minim (half note) beats, in other words you will have a number 2 for the bottom number of the time signature. Therefore your grouping of small value notes will need to follow the minim (half notes) being a 1 beat note.

In the Music Theory Lessons Grade Two book you will find many examples of the correct way to beam the
grouping of small value notes in the new time signatures. You will find them in lesson 11 starting on page number 43.

Within the examples given there are correctly grouping, and also examples of notes wrongly grouped. You will gain a clear understanding of what's right and what's not within the pages of lesson 11.

If you are preparing for the ABRSM Grade Two examinations, the book you will find
below has proved to be a great benefit to many of our students.

This also applies to students who are not taking examinations, but are looking
for the very best in detailed information.

When working with grouping notes correctly, we just need to follow a few simple rules. It really is just a case of when it is correct to join certain notes together, also how many notes can be joined (beamed).

Example in 2 /2 time signature it would be wrong to beam six quaver (eighth notes) together, also grouping eight quaver (eighth notes) together. The correct answer would be grouping two sets of four notes, clearly showing each group represents the value of one minim (half note) beat.

What about smaller note values? Well, there are examples of those too.
