Grade 4. Lesson 12. chromatic scales

Chromatic Scales

The Word 'chromatic' means colourful. When playing a chromatic scale with every note used, we have 12 different notes available instead of 7.

Chromatic scales are not in any particular key, we just say the starting note, identifying the chromatic scale by the note which it starts on.
To play the chromatic scale choose a starting note then move in semitones until you come to the same note name. All together you will have played 13 notes.
Examples are given within the lesson book, both starting and working ascending, and also writing a chromatic scale descending with a key signature.

In the exam you will not be asked to use either harmonic or melodic form of the chromatic scale, so we don't need to worry ourselves over that.

However, you may be asked to circle a section of part of the chromatic scale within a musical score. An example of this is given in this lesson, with information, with a detailed diagram and notes circled.
