Do's and Don't in compound time

 

While grouping notes and rests in compound time there are many things which can go wrong, So we need to take a good look at all the do's and don'ts.
With the beaming of compound 6/8 time, there are a lot of do's and don't. In this lesson we are going to look at many different groupings.

We will be starting by looking at the main beat in 6/8 time, which is a dotted Crotchet (dotted quarter note).

In 6/8 time there will be two dotted main beats per bar. The number 8 is telling you quaver notes (eighth notes)
The number 6 is saying you can have six of these quavers per bar; but the important point to remember is these six are made from the Two Main Beats of 6/8 time. Which are Two Dotted Crotchets (two dotted quarter notes).
